In my previous article, I gave an Overview of Sincere Tawbah and explained its real meaning. This guide will mainly focus on steps to make Tawbah.
You can apply these steps for repenting from all sins, no matter the size. To explain the steps, I will take an example of a boy named “Ahmed” struggling with porn-addiction, and he want to make sincere Tawbah.
(Note: Ahmed is a fictional example.)
Step 1 : Admit the Sin (Stop Lying to Yourself)
One day, While scrolling through social media, Ahmed came across this verse.
- And do not go near adultery. Indeed, it is an immoral act and an evil way. (Quran 17:32)
After consulting a scholar, He came to know that watching porn is haram. He didn’t fool himself by saying, “It’s just a habit; everyone does it.”
He admitted his sin and make Tawbah to stop doing it.
Accepting your mistakes is the first step to correct yourself. You must be loyal to yourself throughout this process.
Step 2: Feel Real Regret (Connect to Allah’s Love)
Now Ahmed knows that he was committing sin. But still, the same night, his desires take control over him and he watch porn again.
But why? Because he has no real regret.
Now he cry out loud and says ” Ya Allah, I’m ashamed. You gave me eyes and I misused them by watching adultery “.
Regret is important step in making sincere Tawbah. Prophet (pbuh) said:
- Regret is repentance. (Sunan Ibn Majah 4252)
Regret will make Ahmed responsible to stop that sin. Without true regret, seeking forgiveness can become a mere formality.
Step 3: Quit the Sin IMMEDIATELY
It was not only one time that Ahmed fell back into sin. He is still committing that sin daily with regret. And it will continue like this until he quit the sin practically.
For this, Ahmed deleted all triggers, like uninstalling apps, blocking websites, avoiding isolation and leaving the company of toxic friends.
He replaced the habit with something better. Like when urges hit, he seek refuge and do 10 push-ups or leave the room.
Also he started working on building prayer routine, reading Quran with translation and listening to Islamic scholars.
Like Ahmed, You must put effort to leave that sin. Most of the time, it will be difficult. But remember, Allah will surely give you a better alternative.

Step 4: Repair the Damage
Ahmed was not only watching porn. He also created a community to share leaks. He was running a complete chain to supply these videos to youth and was earning good amount of haram wealth.
Even he stopped the sin, but still he was committing sins indirectly. Because he was running a haram business and spoiling the society.
To repair the damage, he changed the niche of all communities and started posting Islamic content which was against pornography. This act converted his sins into good deeds.

Step 5: Ask Allah for a Halal Alternative
Leaving a habit like this is not a joke. You will face physical and mental stress be avoiding this kind of addiction. These desires are meant to fulfilled by Halal ways. And you cannot totally resist them.
Ahmed was also fulfilling them through haram means and now he is facing the consequences of leaving them.
After resisting it with pain. Ahmed prayed desperately, “Ya Rabb, I’m drowning in this sin. Open the door of marriage for me! Replace my haram cravings with halal love.”
With time, things were changing. Ahmed was having more Tawakkul on Allah.
And guess what, Within a year, Ahmed met a pious woman through his mosque community. They married to live a Halal life full of blessings.
This was the reward for his patience in hard times.
Same applies for you, For every Haram Act, there is a halal alternative. You just need to be patient.
Final Advice: Trust Allah’s Timing
Ahmed’s marriage didn’t happen overnight—but his sincere Tawbah and effort opened doors he never imagined.
You can follow these steps and align them with your goals. Pick one sin to replace this week and use the practical steps to build gradual, lasting change.
Allah says: “Whoever fears Allah, He will make a way out for them and provide for them from sources they could never imagine.” (Quran 65:2-3) 🌟
